To call it a comprehensive guide would be an understatement; cover to cover, Dr. Passaler balances in-depth insight alongside actionable tips to help readers both understand and address these issues effectively.
Structured around an actionable five-stage plan that combines cutting-edge research with practical exercises, the book begins by explaining how individual sensitivity and past experiences can lead to nervous system dysregulation, and therefore can further manifest as various mental and physical symptoms.
The core includes simple yet powerful practices and routines designed to progressively reverse various stages of dysregulation, carefully organized in a manageable sequence.
Herein presents a bit of a bittersweet glitch, however, and one I definitely don't fault Dr. Passaler, or other authors within this incredibly nuanced and layered subject matter, for.
However…
For readers who have turned to this book for support while currently in a certain state of dysregulation, the information — as helpful and comprehensive as it is — could feel insurmountably dense, daunting, or difficult to move through.
Not only is it a high volume of information, but the book (at least our physical copy) seems to be printed with a tighter typeface and in black and white. We only bring this up as we feel many of the diagrams could have been better connected with the reader had they been presented in colour.
This is by no means a critique of Dr. Passaler's approach; her writing style is enjoyable as she conveys complex scientific concepts in an accessible way, affirming to the reader she's right there on your team, guiding you to improved results.
We think it's a great resource and absolutely recommend Heal Your Nervous System as a well-considered option for anyone interested in untangling their nervous system and related symptoms of dysregulation. It's an engaging, evidence-based, and warmly written guide certain to be of great support for those wanting to learn more about the process.
In fact, it's the type of book we wish we could insta-load into brains with the wave of a magic wand — it could be *that* universally useful. It’s just better suited for anyone on the fringes of nervous system dysregulation, or wanting to learn as a preventative strategy or after recovery, and maybe not right in the thick of it.
